A clear run for the Gotthard: innovative earthing technology for the record-breaking base tunnel

The challenge

During operation of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which passes through the mountain massif at a record length of 57 km, the tracks must remain passable for diesel-powered emergency vehicles at all times. Conventional earthing and short-circuiting (E&S) devices would not be practical due to their need to have the line blocked.

The solution

PFISTERER developed a special earthing and short-circuiting device that can be installed on the ceiling of the tunnel without profiles or barriers. Instead of the usual earthing technology, the feed line is simply short-circuited at a height of 5.5 m by a torque-controlled, removable earthing rod. This innovative rod enables precise positioning and secure screwing of the clamps, as it can only be removed once the required torque has been achieved.

Products used

  • Torque-controlled, removable earthing rods
  • Earthing and short-circuiting devices

Special features

The solution ensures that the tracks remain continuously passable even during the construction work. The use of torque-controlled earthing rods enables safe and precise installation at height, while the holding brackets make handling easier and speed up the installation process.
