400 kV under the sea – improved energy connection of the Peloponnese to central Greece with PFISTERER

The challenge

The safe energy connection of the Peloponnese to the 400 kV grid in central Greece is an impressive technical challenge, especially due to the seismically active region in the strait of Rio-Antirrio near Patras. Laying onshore and submarine cables on this tectonic fault zone requires customized transition solutions that meet the different cable diameters and the high requirements for earthquake safety.

The solution

PFISTERER and Hellenic Cables are continuing their established partnership and working on the impressive land-sea cable connection that will safely link the Peloponnese to the 400 kV grid in central Greece. To this end, PFISTERER will supply MSA high-voltage joints and outdoor terminations, which ensure a safe transition between the submarine cables with a cross-section of 1,200 mm² and the land cables with 2,500 mm². PFISTERER also takes care of the professional installation of the sleeves and terminations, USING specialized fitters. With special system tests up to 420 kV, PFISTERER ensures that the entire system meets the strict requirements of the Greek grid operator.

Products used

  • MSA high-voltage sleeves
  • Outdoor terminations

Special features

PFISTERER’s products have been especially developed and successfully tested for the extreme conditions in Greece, including increased voltage and lightning impact tests. The installation will be performed both on land and under water in the seismically active region of the Gulf of Patras, where special seismic safety requirements must be satisfied. PFISTERER and Hellenic Cables are making a significant contribution to the stability and reliability of the Greek energy grid with this project.
