Universal GIS bypass solution for substations safeguards energy supply in the Canary and Balearic Islands

The challenge

The reliable operation of grids on the Canary and Balearic Islands is of central importance to the stable energy supply of both the local population and the tourist centers. However, the isolated location makes system failures a particular logistical challenge. The energy infrastructure that has developed over decades consists of a large number of cable and connection systems from a variety of manufacturers, which makes flexibility and safety during maintenance and repair work considerably more difficult.

The solution

PFISTERER developed and delivered a highly flexible, transportable cable system for voltages of up to 132 kV for the Spanish high-voltage grid operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE). This system enables fast bypasses in the event of GIS failures and uninterrupted installation or overhaul of existing system components, which significantly improves network reliability. In the first stage, the system is comprised of 54 pre-assembled cable drums, safely stowed in 18 seaworthy HQ-20′ containers. This universal solution adapts to all types of transformers and GIS, regardless of the equipment OEM or applicable standards.

Products used

  • CONNEX connector for 66 kV and 132 kV
  • EST-SUB terminations with surge arrester
  • Motorized cable drums in a variety of configurations

Special features

The stackable container solution from PFISTERER is optimally suited to the maritime conditions between the islands and can be easily transported by truck or ship. The motorized cable drums make it much easier to unwind and rewind the cables, which greatly simplifies installation and later maintenance. This complete turnkey solution was realized in record time, with PFISTERER as general contractor successfully coordinating all logistics and technology as well as mastering all challenges.
